Tour 2 – Around Lesotho
Itinerary and Summary
This is a 7 day tour circumnavigating the landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho with a built in trip to explore the roads to Katse Dam. We will be riding a total distance of approx. 2000 km, 70% of which is on tar, the balance on gravel. It is not advisable for novices to gravel riding.
The first day will as usual start with a short briefing after which we take the road south past the Suikerbosch Nature Reserve, crossing the Vaal river to Frankfort. From there we continue to Kestell, the start of the Drakensberg mountain range. The last stretch of the day will be through the magnificent Golden Gate Highlands National Park, before reaching Clarens, our overnight destination.
Day two is reserved for a ride into Lesotho, our destination being the Katse Dam and retour to Clarens. All of it is still on tar and you can take your time to let the beauty of Lesotho sink in.
On day three we make our way from Clarens to Ficksburg and further to Clocolan. After a lunch break the road leads us to Ladybrand and past Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, to the small town of Wepener, our destination for the day.
The fourth day is the first one where we will leave the tar section of the tour. From Wepener we ride via Zastron towards Telle Bridge, the gravel road carries on along the Lesotho border to Lundin’s Nek, from where we continue to our overnight accommodation at Rhodes.
Day five continues with some nice gravel roads, first via Naudesnek, the highest pass in the Eastern Cape, to Mount Fletcher and Kinirapoort to Matatiele and finally Himeville.
On the morning of day six we ride up Sani Pass for lunch, before going down again and continuing towards the Northern Berg, our rest place right in front of the stunning scenery of the Amphitheatre.
Our last day will lead us through the Northern Berg via the Sterkfontein Dam back into Freestate territory and eventually back to the start of the tour in Johannesburg.
